Championnats du Luxembourg - 26.06-27.06.2004 - Oetrange/Niederanven
Report from the masters time-trial:
Enzo Mezzapesa was the big favourit of the race and he has confirmed. On this very difficult circuit, the former professionnal rider has taken advantage of his long experience. He has ridden his lap with an average speed of nearly 41 km/h, doing the 6th time scratch all categories for one lap. Too fast for his contestants, the most serious ones, Pascal Kess and Roland Schmit from Kayl finishing 43 respectively 57 seconds down.
Report from the masters road-race:
19 riders of the masters' category have the courage to line up for the 4 laps at 9 o'clock in the morning. Total distance: 70 km. The rider from Differdange, Enzo Mezzapesa, is the big favourite. After his defeat last year, he aims for revenge. He has won the time-trial yesterday, but, as he says: "the title on the road is a lot more important". The opposition comes from the riders of Tétange, who form an impressive team with defending champion Marco Lux as leader, as well as from the teams of Wooltz and Kayl. Enzo Mezzapesa dominates the first laps, doing strong turns in the long climb of 2,5 kilometers. But he doesn't manage to drop all of his opponents. A group of 10 riders forms in the lead and, with one lap to go, the 10 riders are still going for the title. Mezzapesa attacks, but on top of the climb, Marco Lux with his team-mates Everard and Frischkorn are still in his wheel, as well as the 3 riders of Velo Wooltz Heuertz, Théobald and Penning and also Pascal Kess from Kayl, second in the time-trial. Defending champion Marco Lux becomes the favorite, with a sprint being very probable. But a little bit later, he has a flat tyre and is out of the race. Pit Everard shows his velocity in the sprint, taking several lengths to the other riders in the last straight line. His team-mate Marc Frischkorn takes second in front of the rider from Wooltz Marco Théobald.
